Mentawai Tour - 5 days and 4 nights
Experience the soul of Mentawai in 5 days and 4 nights.
Live among the tribe, witness sacred rituals, and learn traditional skills passed down through generations. Trek through pristine rainforest, discover hidden waterfalls, and immerse yourself in a way of life untouched by time. This journey promises a rare and unforgettable cultural adventure.
Day 1 – Arrival in the Jungle
You meet your guide at the Siberut port and travel by motorbike or car to the guide’s house, where a simple lunch is served. After that, the adventure begins: you take a long river journey deep into the jungle, followed by about 45 minutes of trekking. In the afternoon, you are welcomed by the Mentawai community and get to explore their traditional UMA house — a long wooden raised house built according to centuries-old techniques. The day ends with dinner, giving you a first taste of their way of life, far away from modern routines.
Day 2 – Living Like a Mentawai
After breakfast, you head into the forest with the locals to collect tree bark, which is traditionally used to make clothing. You then learn how sago is prepared, a staple food for many families. A single sago palm can feed a household for months. You join the search for sago caterpillars, an important traditional food source. After lunch, you participate in riverside fishing, practiced by Mentawai people for generations. Later, you enjoy a relaxed coffee break, explore local handicrafts, learn how hunting poison is made from natural forest ingredients, and help prepare traditional Mentawai dishes.
Day 3 – Hunting & Rituals
After breakfast, you join the tribe on a hunting trip deeper into the jungle — an essential activity for many Mentawai families. Back at the house, you have lunch, then create local bracelets from natural materials. You also go out to collect medicinal plants, knowledge that has been passed down through generations. Later, you help with the ceremony preparations. If you wish, you can purchase a pig or chicken for the ritual (extra cost). After dinner, you take part in the traditional rituals. For the Mentawai, rituals are deeply meaningful: they believe that everything — humans, animals, plants, even objects — has a soul.
Day 4 – Village Life
After breakfast, you visit a local village and join the residents in their daily activities. This gives you a genuine look at traditional village life — often without electricity, roads, or modern facilities. You see how the community hunts, fishes, works with natural materials, and follows ancestral customs that have shaped their identity for centuries. In the evening, dinner is served.
Day 5 – Return to Padang
You pack your belongings and begin the transfer to town, where you board a local boat to Siberut and then take the ferry back to Padang. You leave the jungle and its traditional world behind, but the memories of the Mentawai people, their culture, and their way of life will stay with you.
You are also leaving one of the few remaining places where an ancient culture — despite modern influences — still survives in an authentic form.
