Bukit Lawang & Samosir

Samosir & Bukit Lawang - 6 days and 5 nights

Visit the stunning Samosir Island on Lake Toba, discover Batak culture and scenic viewpoints, and continue to Bukit Lawang for a jungle trek in Gunung Leuser National Park in search of wild orangutans.

Day 1 – West Samosir & Lake Views

The best airport to arrive for the tour is Silangit International Airport. We can pick you up from here and bring you to Samosir to start the tour. We can also pick you up from Medan, but then the drive to Samosir will be longer and we start by goinf to Sihotang Hill.

Your day in Samosir begins in the quiet village of Sampean, where you get a first impression of local life on Samosir Island. From there, you continue to Mual Sihotang, a small waterfall hidden in lush greenery — a refreshing stop surrounded by nature.

The journey then leads to Sihotang Hill, where wide panoramic views open over Lake Toba and the surrounding mountains. A short walk brings you to Hariara Pohan, an iconic solitary tree standing high above the lake, offering one of the most photographed viewpoints on the island.

As the afternoon light softens, you visit Jamars Café for coffee or dinner with a scenic backdrop. The day ends with a relaxed return to your accommodation.

Day 2 – Scenic Highlands & Waterfalls

After breakfast, you head towards Holbung Hill, known for its rolling green landscapes and sweeping views over Lake Toba. A gentle walk here offers one of the most peaceful panoramas on Samosir.

Next, you stop at Love Hill (Bukit Cinta), a viewpoint overlooking the water and surrounding hills. The route continues to Sibea-bea, home to a towering hilltop statue and impressive views across the lake.

In the afternoon, you visit Nai Sigop Waterfall, where clear water flows down natural rock formations — a quiet place to pause and enjoy the surroundings.

The day continues with scenic stops at Silalahi Hill and Bird Hill (Bukit Burung), both offering elevated perspectives over Lake Toba and its dramatic landscape.

Day 3 – Lakes & Island Escape

After breakfast, you begin the day with a visit to Lake Sidihoni — a unique lake located on an island within a lake. Surrounded by hills and open landscapes, it offers a quiet and almost surreal atmosphere, far from busy roads and towns.

From there, you continue to Saulina Resort, where you have time to relax and swim in the clear waters of Lake Toba. The calm setting makes it a perfect place to slow down and enjoy the natural surroundings.

In the afternoon, you take a boat trip to Tulas Island. As you glide across the water, the vastness of Lake Toba becomes even more impressive. On the island, you can walk along the shore, swim, or simply take in the peaceful scenery.

Later in the day, you return to your accommodation, bringing your time on Samosir Island to a relaxed and memorable close.

In the evening we will drive to the Mentawai zone.

DAY 4 - Drive to Bukit Lawang Jungle

DAY 4 - Drive to Bukit Lawang Jungle

After breakfast on Samosir Island, we take the morning ferry back to Parapat and continue by private car through the green highlands of North Sumatra.

The journey takes approximately 5–7 hours in total, including the ferry crossing. Along the way we pass mountain roads, small villages and local markets, with short stops for coffee, lunch or photos. As we drive further north, the landscape slowly changes from volcanic scenery to dense tropical rainforest.

In the afternoon we arrive in Bukit Lawang, a peaceful riverside village at the edge of the jungle. After check-in at your eco-lodge, there is time to relax and freshen up.

In the evening, we take a relaxed walk through the village. Wooden bridges over the river, small cafés, local handicraft shops and the sound of the jungle in the background create a unique atmosphere. It’s the perfect introduction to Bukit Lawang before tomorrow’s jungle trekking adventure.

DAY 5 - Bukit Lawang Jungle

After breakfast in Bukit Lawang, we enter the dense rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park — one of the last wild habitats of the Sumatran orangutan.

Together with an experienced local guide, we hike through thick jungle trails, listening for movement high in the canopy. Broken branches, falling fruit, distant calls — the forest slowly reveals its secrets. With some luck, we encounter wild orangutans in their natural environment, sometimes mothers with babies swinging gracefully between the trees.

Along the way we may spot monkeys, tropical birds, and other wildlife. Around midday, we enjoy a simple jungle lunch surrounded by pure rainforest sounds.

After 5–7 hours of trekking, we return to the village by river tubing — floating down the jungle river, the perfect adventurous ending to an unforgettable day in the wild.
